Stages and Stats, Pyrenees.

A trip through the Pyrenees is a fairy tale for anybody. But for fit, devoted cyclists it’s the journey of a lifetime.

Click on the stage links below to review each stage and see the Relive video of the ride. Very cool.

The overview of the routes for the trip.

This (above) is the overview of the master route map for the trip. Below, farther down the page, are 2 more larger detailed layouts of the route map. The course is clockwise and starts on the Atlantic side of the Pyrenees (left side of the map-images). The first four stages stay in the foothills, and the returning 8 stages are in the high mountains.

Also above, under the page healdine and in blue, are the links to all the individual stages and their maps. Click through these links to review each of the stages (maps, elevation profiles, and stats). Note, all of the pictures on each "stage page" correspond with that particular stage.

Stage stats below. Please note that these numbers are not 100% accurate because they are averages between several different bike computers. However, they should give you an idea of what you can expect. Furthermore, the ride times listed do not account for stoppage, i.e. taking in vista view at the col summits...etc..

Stats for the Clockwise loop. In 2011 the loop/course was changed to a Clockwise direction. It was counter clockwise for the first 4 editions of this trip - those trip stats are the next table down.

Daily Biking Statistics for the France From Inside Pyrenees Cycling Tour - Coast to Coast - and back

" When I was looking for a cycling tour in the mountains of Europe, I came across Allen’s website. As I looked at the pictures from previous years and read about the ride, my heart started to race and my mouth was watering. I just knew this was the trip for me. Every year when I watched the Tour de France, I would dream of climbing those same mountains. I wanted a trip that would be challenging and epic. A trip that was more “meat” than “marshmallow”. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The trip was everything I had hoped for and more. Allen did a fantastic job organizing the trip and planning the route. He has the knowledge, skill, and temperament necessary for leading an elite group of riders across the Pyrenees. I was the only female out of 9 riders and the guys made me feel like I was “one of the guys”. I have done numerous multi day rides from riding across the USA with PAC Tour to riding across state with friends and this trip is at the top of the list. I will always remember the nice people of France, the great food, wine, and scenery, and, the comradeship of our small group. I’m ready to do it again."  Kim Aldridge (completed the trip in 2010).

cycling up the steep rock canyons of the gorges de saint georges

The beginning of Stage 6 from the town of Quillan takes us about 20 miles up the steep canyons to reach the foot of the Col du Porte de Pailheres.

A small one lane road that descends off the Col de Marmare.  As I like to say,  keep an eye out for the roaming livestock.  Classic scene in the Pyrenee.

classic road switchbacks, a cyclist's dream, Col d'Azet

Stage 8 of the tour has 5 climbs.   Here is the last climb,  Col d'Azet,  14 switchbacks.

Pyrenees foothills near the town of Azet, Pyrenees

The start of stage 8 just a couple miles away from the hotel in Mane.  On a morning like this it is stunningly beautiful.  We are in the foothills and headed into the high mountains for 5 climbs today.

Overview of the first 4 stages of the tour, from Biarritz (on the Altantic Coast) to Collioure (on the Mediterranean sea).  The black line represents the border of France and Spain.  Day 2 includes the Col d'Aubisque in the beginning of the day.

These are the 8 stages returning from the Mediterranean sea to the Atlantic, all in the high mountains.  Again the black line is the French/Spanish border
